One of Costa Rica’s top 5 surfing point breaks is in Santa Teresa and this famous wave, called “Suck Rock” is located just in front of Red Palm Villas. Suck Rock is a right-hand wave with a small but very consistent barrel. There needs to be a swell and that needs to be 1.5 meters to create a good ride-able wave.
Suck Rock is definitely one of the best point breaks in Costa Rica and probably the best in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais area. It’s a fast right hander and the favorite of locals and tourists alike.
Suck Rock can be good when the swells are large, and it’s known to get hollow at times. This is Santa Teresa surfing at its best. The break can work at all tides, but it is best at low tide.
Just next to Suck Rock, to the south is a very consistent beach break offering everything from swimming, boogie boarding and beginner surf up to advanced surf. Basically there is 5 miles of white sandy beach with plenty of spots for every age and level of water enthusiast. If you love the ocean and beach, it doesn’t get any better then this which explains why it has been awarded Top 10 Beaches in the World (Forbes) #7 Beach in the World (Conde Nast Traveler), and #1 Beach in Costa Rica, Central and South America, (Tripadvisor Travelers Award).
